Halotestin (fluoxymesterone) is a very strong oral androgen. It increases strength and aggression with little gain in size, and it is among the hardest oral steroids on the liver, cholesterol and mood.
- Once prescribed for low testosterone and some breast cancers, now largely discontinued.
- Little muscle growth or water; mostly strength and “drive”.
- Not suitable as a first or early compound.
Halotestin has a near-legendary reputation in powerlifting and combat sports. It is also one of the compounds experienced users most often warn newcomers away from. This guide explains why both things are true.
What fluoxymesterone is
Fluoxymesterone was developed by Upjohn in the 1950s. It is a 17-alpha-methylated derivative of testosterone with a fluorine atom and an extra hydroxyl group. These changes make it extremely androgenic, stop it converting to estrogen, and make it active as a tablet. It was prescribed for male hypogonadism and delayed puberty, and at higher doses for some advanced breast cancers. The US brand Halotestin was discontinued, and it is not marketed in Canada.
Why it is used
- Strength and power out of proportion to any size gain
- Aggression and focus, which some athletes in combat and strength sports seek
- No water retention and no estrogen conversion, so body weight barely changes, which matters in weight-class sports
It is not a muscle-building compound in the usual sense. People expecting Dianabol-type size are disappointed.
Why strength rises without size
Strength depends partly on how many muscle fibres the nervous system can recruit and how hard it drives them, not only on muscle size. Strong androgens appear to affect the central nervous system, motivation and aggression, which can raise performance on a heavy single lift or in a fight even when muscle hardly changes. Fluoxymesterone may also influence how the body handles cortisol, a stress hormone that breaks down tissue, though the evidence is limited. Because the effect is largely on drive and recruitment, much of the strength gain fades within weeks of stopping. That short-lived, high-cost profile is exactly why it is used mainly by competitive athletes close to an event, and why it makes little sense for someone hoping to build lasting muscle.
Why it is so harsh
Liver
Fluoxymesterone is 17-alpha-alkylated and potent, and liver enzyme rises can be marked even with short use. Cholestatic jaundice and, with prolonged use, liver tumours were reported in medical use. Read liver support during orals for warning signs.
Cholesterol
It causes some of the largest drops in HDL (“good”) cholesterol of any steroid, along with rises in LDL. That adds directly to cardiovascular risk. See steroids and cholesterol.
Mood and behaviour
The aggression some athletes want can spill into irritability, anger, poor sleep and risky behaviour. People with a history of anger problems, mood disorders or impulsivity are at particular risk. Our guide to steroids and mental health covers this, including where to get help in Canada.
Other effects
- Acne and accelerated hair loss
- Higher blood pressure
- Kidney strain reported in some case reports
- Strong suppression of natural testosterone
- In women, rapid and often permanent masculinising effects such as voice deepening
Why it is not a beginner oral
A first experience with anabolic steroids is about learning how your body responds with the least risk. Halotestin is the opposite: high liver and cholesterol strain, marked behavioural effects, and little of the size most beginners are looking for. Comparisons with gentler options are in our article on oral steroids compared, and the case for starting with testosterone alone is in a first testosterone course.
Monitoring if used
Bloodwork before and during use should include liver enzymes (ALT, AST, GGT, bilirubin), a lipid panel, complete blood count and kidney function, plus home blood pressure. Results can change quickly with this compound, so testing within the first few weeks matters. In Canada, your doctor can order these or you can pay privately at LifeLabs or Dynacare; see our bloodwork guide.
Sport and testing
Fluoxymesterone is on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited list and is tested for under the Canadian Anti-Doping Program. Because it is often used close to competition for its strength and aggression effects, it shows up in positive tests in strength and combat sports.
Products and legal status
We carry Zionova Halotestin, with batch lab results on the product page. Fluoxymesterone is a Schedule IV controlled substance in Canada.
Frequently asked questions
Does Halotestin build muscle?
Very little. It mainly increases strength and aggression without much change in size or body weight.
Why is Halotestin so hard on the liver?
It is a potent 17-alpha-alkylated steroid, a structure that resists liver breakdown and commonly raises liver enzymes.
Does Halotestin convert to estrogen?
No. It does not aromatise, so it does not cause water retention or estrogen-related breast tissue growth.
