Smoked Salmon Style Bagel with Herbed Cream Cheese

A Montreal-deli-inspired breakfast built on canned salmon, which costs a fraction of lox and has more protein. Dill, capers and lemon do the rest.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Drain the canned salmon well, remove the skin and any large bones (the small soft bones are edible), and flake it into a bowl.

  2. Add half the lemon juice and the pepper to the salmon and mix gently.

  3. In another bowl, mash the light cream cheese with the Greek yogurt, chopped dill and the rest of the lemon juice until smooth.

  4. Thinly slice the red onion and cucumber.

  5. Split the bagels and toast them until golden, about 3 minutes.

  6. Spread the herbed cream cheese on each half, then top with cucumber slices, the salmon, red onion and capers.

Tips

  • Leave the soft salmon bones in if you like: they are edible and full of calcium.

Swaps

  • Gluten-free: gluten-free bagels.
  • Lower sodium: skip the capers.

Storing and reheating

Mix the salmon and cheese ahead; assemble fresh.
