NPP and Deca are the same hormone, nandrolone, attached to different esters. NPP acts and clears in days; Deca builds and clears over weeks. The results are similar; what differs is timing, injection frequency and how quickly side effects fade.
- NPP: half-life about 2–3 days, injected every 2–3 days.
- Deca: half-life about 6–12 days, injected once a week.

Nandrolone is one of the best-studied anabolic steroids in medicine, used for decades for anemia, muscle wasting and osteoporosis. It comes in two common forms. Choosing between them is mostly about how your body and your routine handle short versus long esters.
Same hormone, different esters
An ester is a fatty acid chain attached to the hormone that controls how fast it leaves the injection site. Once the ester is cut off in the blood, both products deliver identical nandrolone.

What nandrolone does
Nandrolone is highly anabolic and relatively weakly androgenic. In medical studies it increased lean body mass and bone density, improved red blood cell production and, in patients on dialysis and with HIV-related wasting, helped maintain weight. Many users also report less joint discomfort, possibly due to effects on collagen, though evidence for joint benefits in healthy people is limited.
Nandrolone and joints
Nandrolone’s reputation for easing sore joints is one of the main reasons people choose it. The evidence is mixed. Animal studies suggest nandrolone increases collagen synthesis in tendons and may change how tendons handle load, but some of the same research found tendons became stiffer and potentially more prone to injury when combined with heavy training. In humans, nandrolone improved bone density in osteoporosis trials. Some of the joint comfort users notice may also come from water retention around the joints. It is not a treatment for joint injuries; a persistent joint or tendon problem deserves a proper assessment by a physiotherapist or sports medicine doctor, which in many provinces you can book without a referral.
Side effects specific to nandrolone
- Sexual side effects. Low libido and erectile problems, sometimes called “Deca dick”, are common when testosterone is not used alongside. Causes include low testosterone, low estradiol and, in some, raised prolactin. See our prolactin guide.
- Strong suppression of natural testosterone and sperm, which can take months to recover after Deca.
- Water retention and higher blood pressure
- Cholesterol changes and higher hematocrit
- Mood changes, including low mood in some people
Choosing between them
Arguments for NPP
- If side effects appear, they fade within a couple of weeks of stopping.
- Blood levels respond faster to changes.
- Shorter time to detect and adjust problems found on bloodwork.
Arguments for Deca
- One injection a week instead of three.
- Less injection-site irritation overall; NPP can sting.
- Steadier levels with less effort.
For someone using nandrolone for the first time, the faster clearance of NPP is a real safety advantage: if libido or mood problems appear, they resolve sooner. This is why many Canadian harm-reduction resources prefer the shorter ester for a first try.
Recovery afterwards
Nandrolone is one of the most suppressive anabolic steroids, and recovery of natural testosterone and sperm production after it is often slower than after testosterone alone. With Deca, the long ester means suppression continues for weeks after the last injection. With NPP, levels fall within about two weeks, so recovery can begin sooner. A doctor can check LH, FSH and testosterone to track recovery. Frequently asked questions
Is NPP stronger than Deca?
No. Both release nandrolone. NPP acts faster and clears faster; per milligram, NPP contains slightly more nandrolone because its ester is lighter.
Why does nandrolone affect libido?
Usually because natural testosterone is suppressed, estradiol is too low, or in some people prolactin rises. Bloodwork shows which.
How long does Deca stay in your system?
The hormone clears over several weeks, but metabolites can be detected in drug tests for many months.
