Melanotan II (MT2) is a synthetic version of the hormone that tells skin cells to make melanin. It darkens skin with little or no sun, but it is not approved anywhere and has a real side-effect list.
- Common effects: nausea, flushing, darker moles and freckles, and spontaneous erections.
- Health Canada has warned against unauthorised melanotan products.
- A tan from MT2 is not reliable sun protection, and new or changing moles need a doctor.
For a country with long winters, it is not surprising that a “tan without the sun” peptide has found a following in Canada. Melanotan II does what it claims: it darkens skin. The questions are how, at what cost, and what it means for skin cancer risk. Here is the honest picture.
How melanotan II works
Your skin tans when ultraviolet light triggers the release of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). This binds to the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) on pigment cells and tells them to make eumelanin, the dark brown pigment. Melanotan II is a stabilised, lab-made copy of α-MSH developed at the University of Arizona in the 1980s, originally to see whether a tan could be produced without UV damage.
The problem is that MT2 is not selective. Besides MC1R, it activates other melanocortin receptors in the brain, which control appetite and sexual function. That explains most of its side effects, and why a close relative, bremelanotide, was later developed as a sexual-desire drug (see our PT-141 guide).
MT2 and its relatives
| Compound | Status | Main effect |
|---|---|---|
| Melanotan II | Not approved anywhere | Tanning, plus appetite and sexual effects |
| Afamelanotide (melanotan I) | Approved in Europe and the US as an implant for a rare light-sensitivity disorder | More selective tanning |
| Bremelanotide (PT-141) | Approved in the US for low sexual desire in women | Sexual desire |
Side effects
- Nausea, often strongest with the first doses
- Facial flushing and a warm feeling
- Reduced appetite
- Spontaneous erections in men and increased arousal
- Darkening of moles and freckles, and sometimes new moles
- Yawning, fatigue and stretching shortly after injection
- Uneven pigmentation, especially on the face
Less common but reported in medical journals: raised blood pressure, kidney problems and, rarely, a painful prolonged erection (priapism), which is a medical emergency.
Melanotan and skin cancer
This is the most important question, and the honest answer is that it is not known. There are published case reports of melanoma in people using melanotan, and dermatologists worry that rapidly darkening moles make changes harder to spot. Case reports do not prove cause, but there are no long-term studies to show it is safe either.
A melanotan tan also does not replace sun protection. A darker skin tone gives only modest protection against UV damage. Keep using SPF 30 or higher sunscreen and shade, as Health Canada recommends, especially between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. when the UV index is highest.
Why results vary between people
How much someone darkens depends largely on skin type. People with fair skin that burns easily (Fitzpatrick types I and II) often have MC1R variants that respond poorly to α-MSH, and these are also the people at highest risk of melanoma. People with skin that already tans easily see faster darkening. Red-haired people, who commonly carry MC1R variants, may see patchy results. Effects fade gradually over weeks to months once use stops, as pigmented skin cells are naturally replaced.
Health Canada’s position
Melanotan products are not authorised for sale in Canada as drugs, and Health Canada has issued public advisories warning Canadians about unauthorised tanning injections and nasal sprays. Products bought online for personal use are sold as research chemicals, with no approved labelling or dose.
If you research it
Vita Melanotan 10 mg is supplied as freeze-dried powder for research. It is reconstituted with bacteriostatic water as described in our reconstitution guide, and the product page includes a measuring calculator and a guide to under-the-skin injection sites. Keep a photo record of your moles before and during use so changes are easy to see.
Frequently asked questions
Does melanotan II work without sun?
It darkens skin even with little sun, but most people notice faster results with some UV exposure, which is part of the concern.
Is melanotan legal in Canada?
It is not authorised as a drug in Canada, and Health Canada has warned against unauthorised tanning products. It is sold for research.
Why does melanotan cause nausea?
It activates melanocortin receptors in the brain, not only in the skin. Nausea is usually worst with the first doses.
