A “kickstart” means adding a fast-acting oral steroid at the start of a course of long-acting injectables, to see changes sooner while the injectables build up. It speeds up visible results, but it adds liver strain, blood pressure rises and more side effects for a mostly temporary gain.
- Long esters like enanthate take weeks to reach steady levels; orals act within hours.
- Early gains from orals are largely water and glycogen.
- Most harm-reduction advice is to skip the kickstart on a first try.
The kickstart idea has been part of gym culture for decades. It comes from a real pharmacological fact, the slow start of long-acting esters, but the solution adds risk exactly when you know least about how your body responds. This guide explains the reasoning, the trade-offs and the alternatives.
The problem a kickstart tries to solve
Long-acting injectable esters, such as testosterone enanthate or cypionate, have half-lives of roughly four to eight days. Each injection adds to what is already in the blood, so levels rise step by step and take about four to six weeks to reach a steady state. During that time, natural testosterone production is already falling, and visible changes are slow.
Oral steroids are different. Compounds like Dianabol or Anavar reach peak levels within hours and clear within a day. Adding one early produces changes on the scale and in the mirror within the first couple of weeks. That is the entire appeal.
| Long-acting injectable | Oral steroid | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to steady levels | About 4–6 weeks | Same day |
| Half-life | 4–8 days (enanthate, cypionate) | Hours (most orals) |
| Liver strain | Low | Moderate to high (17-alpha-alkylated) |
| Effect on HDL cholesterol | Moderate | Large |
What the oral actually adds
With water-retaining orals such as Dianabol and Anadrol, a large share of early weight gain is water and glycogen stored in muscle. That makes muscles look and feel fuller and lifts feel stronger, which is motivating. But when the oral stops, much of that water leaves, so part of the “kickstart” result is temporary. Drier orals like Anavar add less weight but also less obvious early change.
In other words, a kickstart mainly changes how fast progress feels, not how much lasting muscle is built over the whole course.
The costs
- Liver strain. Most orals are 17-alpha-alkylated, which raises liver enzymes and can cause cholestasis. See liver support during orals.
- Cholesterol. Orals cause bigger drops in HDL than injectable testosterone, sometimes within days.
- Blood pressure. Water-retaining orals push blood pressure up quickly.
- Harder troubleshooting. If acne, mood changes, breast tenderness or high blood pressure appear in the first weeks, you cannot tell which compound caused them.
- Estrogen side effects from Dianabol arrive at the same time as testosterone’s, which is when people are least practised at recognising them.
Why a first course usually skips it
Canadian harm-reduction resources and most experienced coaches give the same advice for a first experience with anabolic steroids: one compound, testosterone, so you learn how your body responds. A single compound makes side effects easy to trace, keeps liver and cholesterol strain lower, and gives a clean baseline for any future decisions. Our article on a first testosterone course explains the reasoning, and realistic first-cycle results shows what testosterone alone tends to deliver.
Patience is a strategy
If the slow start is the frustration, a few things help without adding a second drug:
- Track the right numbers. Weekly averages of body weight, waist measurement and key lifts show trends that daily weigh-ins hide.
- Take progress photos in the same light every two weeks.
- Get your training and food dialled in first. The first weeks are the best time to build habits: enough protein, consistent sleep and progressive training.
- Use bloodwork to confirm levels rather than guessing from the mirror.
If an oral is used anyway
For those who decide to include an oral despite the risks, the harm-reduction basics are consistent: bloodwork before starting (liver enzymes, lipids, complete blood count, kidney function), a repeat test a few weeks in, daily home blood pressure checks, no alcohol, no second oral, and stopping at the first sign of liver trouble. Our guides to Anadrol and Dianabol, testosterone with Dianabol and oral steroids compared explain the differences between options. Arrange tests through your doctor or privately at LifeLabs or Dynacare; see our bloodwork guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is an oral kickstart?
Adding a fast-acting oral steroid at the start of a course of long-acting injectables, so changes appear while the injectables build up to steady levels.
Is a kickstart necessary?
No. Long-acting testosterone reaches steady levels in about four to six weeks on its own. A kickstart mainly speeds up early, partly temporary, changes.
Why is a kickstart risky for beginners?
It adds liver strain, cholesterol and blood pressure effects, and makes it hard to know which compound is causing a side effect.
